The project for the extension of a mid-20th Century block of flats on the border of Chelsea and Belgravia adds two floors with five apartments onto the existing roof level.

The massing of the extension has been carefully articulated as the principal driver of design. The new fifth floor accommodation is generally stepped back, with further portions cut away to control overlooking, to provide terraces as amenity spaces and to generate a pleasing form and rhythm.

This architectural language of roofscape, of dormer and mansard, gives way to a pure glass-panelled box above to form the sixth floor accommodation.

Set back further again, this will appear dematerialised against the sky to minimise the visual impact of the whole development, tailored to fit into its urban environment.

“Airspace development is one of the most acesible opprtunities for the creation of new homes within cities. Sustainable development, it describes utilising unused space on rooftops of existing buildings for new homes. Development of a building’s airspace needs to be complimentary to host property, is best achieved through modular Consruction and is only successful if Curated to complement the existing building.”
