Jo Cowen Architects were commissioned to design the full remodelling of this well-appointed mews house in Chelsea.
The project involved the full demolition and rebuild of the existing property. This included rationalising floorplates to improve the layout and functionality of the mews house. This allowed our client to receive better proportions in rooms and allowed us to create a range of spaces from entraining to more private and intimate spaces. A full rebuild allowed for JCA to improve ceiling heights, a much-coveted feature for a mews house.
The full basement includes a dining room and a custom built fully cooled wine cellar, complete with brass trims. All joinery in the project is fully bespoke, featured stained oak veneer and integrated lighting. The bathrooms are finished in large format Calcutta marble slabs, custom vanity units and bras tap fittings.
One of the most beautiful features in this mews house is the fully bespoke staircase, where JCA designed the hand rail where we were careful to match the oak tone on the treads and the custom made spindles which were hand sanded and then finished in a bronze paint.
The roof extension allowed JCA to provide a desirable terrace for our client. An unlikely and surprising element that we were pleased to be able to design for our client.
The result of Stratton House was a beautifully bespoke project tailored to our clients needs and a healthy increase in square foot from the original property.
We worked closely with this ambitious and inspiring client to deliver a property with a wealth of unusual features, including double height spaces, gallery staircases, garden podiums, interconnected light wells, crittall partitions and glazed walkways. We also worked with them on lighting and interior design, paying close attention to detailing and flow of light.
We are enormously proud of the result; this creative and malleable design created a stunning home that will be enjoyed in equal measure by the adults and children who live there.
