Associate Director
Karl is an architect, artist and Associate Director of Jo Cowen Architects. He co-leads the practice’s private homes, prime residential, and mansion block projects within the office.
He works closely with both private clients and developers, listening carefully to their needs and aspirations to maximise the potential of their properties and deliver all sizes projects to the highest standards. He has extensive experience of working with different building typologies such as period properties (including Listed buildings and those within conservation areas) as well as Class Q conversions and new-build one off homes; in London, Wiltshire, Dorset and throughout the rest of the United Kingdom.
Prior to joining Jo Cowen Architects, Karl worked on multiple published and award-winning residential and cultural projects both in the UK and throughout Europe. Amongst these included winning the Architecture Today Schueco award for Residential Reuse, Retrofit and Adaptation with Barbara Weiss Architects where he was co-director before joining JCA. Other collaborations on award winning projects include the World Architecture Festival (WAFX) Award for creative reuse for the Farsons Brewery Malta, as well as the British Construction Industry (BCI) Major Project of the Year Award and the RICS Project of the Year award for the Sainsbury Wellcome Centre for Neuroscience at UCL; all with ritchie*studio.
Karl is also a Royal Academician (RWA), he was given this lifetime honour by being elected to the Royal West Academy of Art in 2022. His art work is held in both public and private collections world-wide and has been exhibited at the Saatchi Gallery, Onassis Cultural Centre Athens, V&A digital futures, the New York Institute of Technology, the Royal Academy of Arts and the Royal West Academy Bristol.
