Mark Gorton is a design led architect with over 20 years experience across all RIBA stages, having led complex residential, commercial, transport and cultural schemes across the globe. Marks’ holistic approach to design, with experience in master-planning, landscape and architecture, afford him a unique ability to unlock complex briefs and achieve the highest quality places and spaces that are both viable and sustainable. Mark believes that for successful architecture to be realised, it is critical to understand how people’s lives can be improved through design that is rooted in heritage, context, landscape and well being. Prior to joining Jo Cowen Architects, Mark was leading teams at Rogers Stirk Harbour + Partners for some 13 years, on a range of projects through stages 2-6, both within the UK and abroad.
Since joining JCA an Associate Director in 2021, Mark has led the design on numerous projects within the studio, including Oxford Gardens in Bournemouth for clients Marchmont and Peveril Securities, Kidbrooke Village in London for Berkeley East Thames Limited and most recently Morden Wharf at Greenwich Peninsular for Galliard Homes and City Developments Limited. Other notable projects prior to joining JCA include BBVA Bancomer Tower in Mexico City, Geneva Airport in Switzerland, Melbourne Metro State Library Station in Australia and The Leadenhall Building in London as well as other complex schemes in the UK, US, Indonesia and China.
Being experienced in front end design and project delivery alike, Mark is able to predict complex construction and viability issues at conception stages and manage the teams with rigour and ease, teaching our junior team members and ensuring deliverables are met and exceeded at every stage.
In addition to architecture Mark is also an Internationally published photographer, shooting architecture, construction, people and abstract photography. He has previously been shortlisted for the Arcaid Images ‘Architectural Photographer of Year Award’, has received four commendations at the International Photography awards in New York and most recently received a Silver Award at the Prix de la Photographie in Paris.
